Neighborhoods of the Charleston Peninsula, South Carolina
Ansonborough was the first suburb of Charleston. Many of these homes were built in the early 1800s, and some are still in need of renovation. Ansonborough is located southeast of Marion Square on the Charleston Peninsula. Most of these houses are just a few blocks from the Charleston Harbor.
Cannonborough is made up mostly of the classic Charleston style houses with porches (and sometimes double porches) that run the length of the house. Cannonborough is located in the middle of the peninsula around where Coming Street meets Cannon Street. Although many of these houses have been converted into condos, you can still usually find a good selection of houses for sale.
French Quarter is one of the oldest neighborhoods in downtown Charleston. Most of the original residents were French, as the name implies. The French Quarter has the only French Huguenot church remaining in the United States. This community is also home to the famous Dock Street Theatre, which was the first building in the country dedicated to theater performance. The French Quarter is rich in culture and history, and it has a wonderful selection of homes as well.
Hampton Park Terrace is located just across from The Citadel, so it's well above Crosstown. This neighborhood has a few Charleston style homes, but it is mostly made up of craftsman style houses and bungalows. Hampton Park Terrace is one of the few historic Charleston neighborhoods with houses under $1 million. Hampton Park also has larger than average yards for downtown Charleston.
Harleston Village was home to the first golf club in the United States, even though it didn't (and still doesn't) have a golf course! Some of College of Charleston's campus overlaps Harleston Village. This is one of the largest neighborhoods in downtown Charleston, so you'll find a good selection of homes for sale at any given time. Most of these houses were built in the mid 1800's, but there are also some newer homes that were built in the past few years.
Radcliffeborough is located just east of MUSC, the Medical University of South Carolina. Because of its location, many of these houses are rented out to MUSC and College of Charleston students. This is a good neighborhood to consider especially for investors because of the rental income that these houses bring. However, the location also brings many buyers looking for owner occupied residence.
South of Broad, as the name suggests, is simply all of the homes south of Broad Street in downtown Charleston. Although it is more of a section of the peninsula rather than a subdivision, South of Broad is the most desirable neighborhood in all of Historic Charleston. These homes fetch the highest real estate prices, and they're some of the most photographed homes in downtown Charleston. South of Broad includes the prestigious homes on the Battery as well as the famously colorful Rainbow Row.
Wagener Terrace has some of the most affordable homes in this list of neighborhoods, but it still sees a lot of demand from home buyers. Like Hampton Park Terrace, Wagener Terrace has mostly non-Charleston style homes. You'll find great bungalow homes as well as brick cottage style homes to choose from. Although many of these houses have been renovated, you'll find that there are still quite a few in need of repair.
