Various types of adverse weather can be found in any region. Living in Charleston, SC, requires that you know how to prepare for tropical storms and hurricanes. Since 1980, there have been 2 tropical storms and 4 hurricanes to make landfall in South Carolina. Though luck certainly favors the prepared when storm season is in full swing, Charleston beachfront properties can be at risk. Follow these 5 tips on how to prepare for a tropical storm provided by the Keadle Real Estate Group which will also assist you with general emergency preparedness:

  1. Purchase essential items to last a period of 2 weeks. You will need 1-2 gallons of water per day per person and per pet to ensure there is enough water for drinking, sanitation and food preparation. You also must stock up on non-perishable food items, prescription medications, first aid supplies, one or more full gasoline cans, paper goods, batteries, sanitizing products and any items you will need to care for members of the family that have special requirements, such as a baby, senior citizen or pets.

  2. Stay abreast of current news with a radio. Once the power shuts off and your wireless connection is down, you will need a radio. Make sure your radio is either charged by hand-winding, sunlight and/or batteries.

  3. Keep important documents on-hand. Birth certificates, titles to your family cars and your home, insurance policies, and social security cards are documents you will need in the event of evacuation. You can also place irreplaceable, old family photos in the same plastic bag.

  4. Make a plan. When adverse weather or emergency strikes, your loved ones may be in different locations. Decide on a safe place to meet and where you will go once everyone is reunited. Also, include in your plan how you will prepare food as you may need to purchase camping goods to make life easier.

  5. Keep an extra cell phone battery. In the event that the cellular lines are functioning, it is helpful to have a fully charged battery available for use.
