Folly Beach Renourishment Project

Local Information

Thanks to Folly Beach city managers and South Carolina legislators, Folly Beach was renourished in 2005.  The project cost approximately $16 million, but it was long overdue.  More than 2 million cubic yards of sand were pumped from a site about 3 miles off the shore of Folly.  For about five months, residents and visitors had to live alongside bulldozers and a 30-inch diameter pipe, which covered the beach in stages.  At its longest, the pipe was about 5 miles and reached from the Washout to the County Park.

The result of this substantial project is a wider, flatter, and more elevated beachfront.  In fact, the "new" beach is about five to six feet higher than the old one.

This project is actually the second beach renourishment that Folly Beach has received - the first took place in 1993.  In the years to come, Folly may need another facelift.  But until then, the beach is ready for all the sand castle-building, sunbathing, and surfing that will come its way this summer.
