Military men and women who are assigned to Charleston often search for homes close to the Air Force Base or the Naval Weapons Station. Due to the nature of their jobs, it is critical for these home buyers to live within a close radius of the AFB or the NWS. Eagle Run and Wescott Plantation are two of the best neighborhoods within a short drive to both of these locations.

Living Near Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station

The Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station are centrally located to everything in Charleston. The AFB is off Dorchester Road in North Charleston (the address is 5500 International Boulevard). The AFB is about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Charleston, about 45 minutes to 1 hour from your choice of 3 beaches (Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island or Folly Beach), and only 20 minutes from Northwoods Mall.

The Naval Weapons Station is located at 2316 Red Bank Road in Goose Creek. From Interstate 526, you would take the N. Rhett exit (for north) and then turn right onto Red Bank Road. The NWS is approximately 35 minutes from downtown Charleston, 45 minutes to the beaches, and 15 minutes to Northwoods Mall in North Charleston.

Nearby Neighborhoods

Two neighborhoods to consider that are nearby include Eagle Run and Wescott Plantation. These are zoned for Dorchester II school district, which is one of the highest ranking school districts in Charleston. Both neighborhoods are only a quick 10-15 minute drive to the AFB and about 25 minutes to the NWS in Goose Creek on the other side of I-26.

Eagle Run is a medium sized neighborhood with single family homes in the $167-200K range. The neighborhood began construction in 2007 and has continued to the present. Home designs are typically 3 and 4 bedrooms with at least 2 full baths and 1 to 2 car garages. Lot sizes are average for new construction in Charleston, about .15 to .20 acres. Eagle Run is within walking distance to Oakbrook Elementary and the Middle School, and it is a short drive to Fort Dorchester High School. There is a Super Walmart close by, and Northwoods Mall is only 15 minutes away.

Wescott Plantation in Summerville is a beautiful, master planned golf course community with many subsections that have townhomes as well as single family homes. Pricing for townhomes range from $115-175K for a 3 bedroom home with 2 full bathrooms. Some townhomes have a 1 or 2 car garage, as well. Single family home prices vary from $135K for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home to about $300K for a 5 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home. Several of the lots are on the golf course or a pond, and some back up to the woods for added privacy. Fort Dorchester Elementary, a desirable school in Dorchester County II School District, is located at the entrance of the parent neighborhood, Wescott Plantation. Wescott’s amenities include golf, a clubhouse, a community pool, jogging trails, and play parks.
