Owning a historic home is just one of the many reasons people move to Charleston. Known for its variety of architecture types, the city is also overflowing with opportunities to buy historic homes whether you want a plantation home or something a little simpler as found in the French Quarter. With its rich history and vibrant culture, you don't want to miss our on Charleston Real Estate and the history associated with it.

In the city, there are some locations that have more desirable historic properties than others due to walkability, nearby sites and attractions, and proximity to the water. These areas include:

South of Broad

This is where history began in the city. A neighborhood of stately historic homes, you’ll find beautiful homes in this area. South of Broad has many homes ranging into the $2 - $12 million range. These homes are considered mansions with many being 6,000+ sqft and up to 15,000 sqft in some cases.

When money is no object, there are two sections that simply scream exclusivity and history: Rainbow Row and The Battery. The homes of Rainbow Row get their name for their brightly colored exteriors. The Battery (pictured) is where the land meets the water. You’ll find some of the state’s most expensive, exclusive homes for sale in this neighborhood. Both of these sections have the most photographed homes in the city, and you’ll find everything from t-shirts to kitchen aprons to signed paintings that are themed with their architecture.

French Quarter

Old World charm and culture are still alive and well in the French Quarter. This area includes homes that are in the Colonial and post-Colonial styles. Cobblestone streets and art galleries await as well as shopping centers and glimpses of the beautiful Charleston Harbor.

Harleston Village

Want to find homes with many different styles? Harleston Village has it all from Georgian and Greek Revival to Victorian homes. Dining and shopping are popular in the area as well as stunning views of the Ashley River and College of Charleston campus.

These areas are just some of your choices when looking for historical homeownership in Charleston, SC. The one area that we have yet to discuss is the most affordable:

Ansonborough

Just outside of original city walls, this area became quite popular between the 1820s and 1860s. When affordability is on top of your list, this neighborhood has something for you. Ansonborough became relatively abandoned in the 20th century with many of the homes being neglected.

However, a quick change in the past decade has turned the neighborhood into a prime area for history homes. Many of these homes are the classic shotgun style, and some have great harbor views.

Some of the homes will need a little TLC to get back to their old glory days, so this neighborhood is ideal for buyers looking for a project.
