Downtown Charleston real estate has seen some of the highest appreciation in the entire metro due largely to its walkability. Since most buyers want to live within walking distance of shopping and restaurants, these more centrally located districts tend to fetch the highest prices. Ansonborough is located within easy walking distance of the Market and King Street areas. Although this was the first suburb of the original walled city back in the late 1600’s, today it offers a good selection of homes dating from the 1800's – not to mention a great, central location.

Cannonborough is one of the most affordable neighborhoods below the Crosstown. This section has seen a good deal of revitalization over the past ten years and still has a good selection of homes in need of renovation. Cannonborough appeals to investors, buyers who enjoy home projects, and also those wanting to live within easy walking distance of upper King Street.

French Quarter is one of the cultural hubs of Downtown Charleston. Boasting the famous Dock Street Theatre and more than 30 art galleries, this neighborhood is known for its Old World charm and French heritage. Plus, the French Quarter’s prime location makes it enormously popular for home buyers wanting to walk to Charleston’s best restaurants, shopping, and sites.

Hampton Park Terrace is adjacent to the Citadel on the northwest section of the peninsula. Although many good places are within walking distance (such as the Riverdogs baseball stadium and also Hampton and Brittlebank Parks), this is not within walking distance of the majority of shops and restaurants in Downtown Charleston.

Harleston Village is one of the largest Downtown Charleston neighborhoods, so it appeals to a wide range of buyers wanting to be near MUSC, CofC, and King Street. Its central location and beautiful parks make Harleston Village a highly desirable area to live.

Radcliffeborough lies between the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston, so it offers a great location for investors as well as buyers wanting to live close to upper King Street. This is one of the more affordable neighborhoods below the Crosstown, and you’ll still find many homes in need of renovating.

South of Broad is the most prestigious neighborhood in Downtown Charleston. This southernmost section of the peninsula contains the Battery, White Point Gardens, and Rainbow Row. Some of the best views of the Charleston Harbor can be found in South of Broad.

Wagener Terrace is not a very walkable neighborhood because it’s located on the northwest section of the Charleston Peninsula. However, it’s one of the only neighborhoods where you’ll find a large selection of houses in the $400’s and below price range. This up and coming neighborhood has witnessed a growing demand from home buyers in the past decade.
