Harleston Village is made up of more than fifty blocks, making it one of the largest neighborhoods in Downtown Charleston. Bordered by Broad Street to the south, King Street to the east, and Calhoun Street to the north, Harleston Village offers an ideal location for home buyers. If you’re wanting to live within easy walking distance of some of the best shopping and restaurants in Charleston, this historic neighborhood should certainly be on your list to consider.
When it was established in the late 1700’s, Harleston Village was largely made up of tidal creeks which were used to power the lumber mills. Residential development took place gradually over the next century as many prominent Charlestonians built homes that remain some of the most impressive on the entire Charleston Peninsula. In 1786, Harleston Village started the first golf club in the United States. Although the neighborhood has never had a golf course, the club was deemed more as a social club for the Charleston as well as British elite. In 1886, Francis Rodgers built a five-story home boasting 24,000 square feet, Tiffany windows, and hand-carved marble fireplaces. Today, the home (referred to as the Wentworth Mansion, pictured) is a five star hotel which has been named the #1 Small City Hotel in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure. On the hotel grounds there is also a AAA Four-Diamond, Forbes Four Star restaurant called Circa 1886 which has a fantastic menu with local fare.
In the 1890’s Harleston Village converted one of its tidal pools into Colonial Lake. Today, this park is a popular destination for runners and dog walkers due to its central location and beautiful views. The homes overlooking Colonial Lake are some of the most sought after in Harleston Village. In addition to Colonial Lake, Harleston Village has several nice parks. Moultrie Park is located on Ashley Avenue and features six lighted tennis courts, a playground, a basketball court, and an intramural field. Cannon Park, located at the intersection of Rutledge Avenue and Calhoun Street, has a playground and a large, grassy area where dogs can run freely during certain hours of the day.
Home buyers are generally very pleased with the two private schools located in Harleston Village. Charleston Day School serves first through eighth grade students and enrolls just over 200 students per year. Mason Preparatory School is considerably larger, with over 300 students in grades one through eight. For private high school options, Ashley Hall (all-girls) and Porter Gaud are only a 5 to 10 minute drive.
Harleston Village Real Estate
Harleston Village sees a steady demand from home buyers due to its prime location, the many shops and restaurants within walking distance, its scenic parks, and its good private schools. The neighborhood is also popular among investors looking to rent out their properties to students attending College of Charleston or MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina). The majority of the College of Charleston campus (pictured) lies within Harleston Village, and the medical university is located on the northern boundary of the community. Whether you’re looking for an investment property, a low maintenance condo to use as a second home, or a historic single family home, Harleston Village offers a location that is hard to beat in Downtown Charleston.
