Wakendaw Lakes was established in the 1980s, so its homes offer a mix of home designs with wood siding, vinyl, and brick exteriors. The community offers a good selection of marsh and lakefront homes for sale. Most of the houses were completed in 1995, so the lot sizes are larger than the newer developments that make up the majority of Mt. Pleasant home listings. Lots in Wakendaw Lakes average .25 to .5 acre. Also, if you’re looking for a single story ranch style house, this will be a good neighborhood to keep an eye on as new listings become available.
Wakendaw Lakes’ location off Mathis Ferry Road makes it very convenient for commuting via Interstate 526 since the exit is only a few minutes away. Or, you can get to the Ravenel Bridge in just over 10 minutes. In addition to its central location, a big perk for the community is that it has about the lowest HOA fee in Mount Pleasant (no amenities help moderate this $100 annual cost).

Wakendaw Lakes Homes in Mt. Pleasant, SC
Wakendaw Lakes is a mid size marsh and waterfront community in Mount Pleasant located off of Mathis Ferry Road. Since Mathis Ferry runs parallel to Highway 17, this location makes commuting a little easier during rush hours in Mount Pleasant. Wakendaw Lakes is a short 10 minute drive to downtown Charleston or to the Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island beaches. It is one the most affordable Mt. Pleasant communities you'll find this close to downtown Charleston.
Wakendaw Lakes was established in the early 1970's, and there were homes still being completed up to 1995. The homes were built individually by custom home builders, as was common back in the 70's. Some homes were built in a very traditional, single-story-brick-ranch style. Some were two story homes with raised foundations built in a Southern style with large front porches. Others were traditional two story brick or wooden siding homes. Home sizes range from 1,800 square feet to about 3,500 square feet.
Floor plans include 3 to 4 bedrooms. Lot sizes are fairly large for Mount Pleasant but more typical for established neighborhoods - a fourth to a half acre. The farther back in the neighborhood you go, the more homes you'll find with beautiful marsh views or with a dock and floater in shallow water. Accessing the creeks in a small boat is certainly possible in Wakendaw Lakes.
Schools are often important to buyers beginning their home search in Mount Pleasant. Wakendaw Lakes is zoned for James B. Edwards Elementary, Moultrie Middle School, and Lucy Beckham High School, which rank among the top schools in the Charleston area. More pros for this community include the Cooper River walking, running, and biking trail which starts on the Mount Pleasant side of the bridge and takes you along the Cooper River Bridge all the way to downtown Charleston. Also, the Mount Pleasant Pier owned by the county parks and recreation division is great place to spend the day. You can fish, relax on the rocking chairs and swings, or eat lunch on the harbor.
