Radcliffeborough is located directly east of the MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) campus, so this neighborhood is ideal for medical school employees as well as investors looking to rent out these homes to students. Since it’s also across the street from the College of Charleston campus, this proximity adds to the growing demand from both buyers and renters. Although MUSC (pictured right) and CofC contribute to Radcliffeborough’s appeal, the neighborhood is also popular among home buyers simply looking for a primary residence due to its good location and relative affordability.
Over the past decade, this community has become a hip place to live for residents wanting an urban environment without the status associated with the southern sections of the peninsula. Located north of Calhoun Street and east of Rutledge Avenue, Radcliffeborough is within easy walking distance of the trendy bars, restaurants, and shops of the revitalized upper King Street (pictured left) which makes up its easternmost boundary. On Saturday mornings, the Farmers’ Market in Marion Square features locally grown produce and flowers, crafts, art work, freshly prepared crepes and gyros, and often live music. This is one of the best farmers’ markets in SC, and it usually runs from April to December.
Many of the homes in Radcliffeborough have been renovated, but it still offers a good selection of older homes in need of repairs and updating. While other sections of the Charleston Peninsula have been extensively renovated, Radcliffeborough is a great neighborhood to consider for the do-it-yourself buyer (or the buyer with the time, patience, and money to contract out the work needed to bring these homes back to their former charm). You’ll find that many of these houses have been converted into duplexes or condos with their own bathrooms and kitchens. These shared buildings provide the most affordable real estate options.
