South of Broad is perhaps the most prestigious – the most sought after – neighborhood in all of Charleston. This prized section of Downtown Charleston includes some of the most photographed homes and public buildings such as Rainbow Row, the Battery, White Point Gardens, the Old Exchange and Provost building, and St. Michael's Church. South of Broad also includes the popular addresses of Tradd Street, lower King Street, and East Bay which feature stunning architecture and coveted historic homes. South of Broad runs from one of the main commercial avenues – Broad Street – to the southern tip of the peninsula where homes overlook the Charleston Harbor. With the exception of its northern boundary, Broad Street, this section is mostly residential. Although it’s not centrally located, residents can still walk to some of the best restaurants and shopping in Downtown Charleston. Located on Broad Street you’ll find the Oak Steakhouse as well as Fast and French. Within a few blocks north of Broad Street you can walk to Magnolia’s, High Cotton, S.N.O.B., and Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar.
With a rich history dating back to the early 1700’s, South of Broad boasts a long list of important figures who have socialized within its quarters – Teddy Roosevelt, George Trenholm, and Robert E. Lee. The circa 1772 Heyward-Washington House located on Church Street was home to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Heyward, Jr. Also, George Washington stayed there in 1791 during his tour of the nation as President. This home is one of four homes open to the public for tours in South of Broad. The Edmondston-Alston House is the only home on the Battery that is available to the public. The Nathaniel Russell House on Meeting Street is best known for the free-floating staircase that extends throughout the center of this three story home. It was built in 1808 and is the southernmost point of Charleston's famous Museum Mile. The most impressive of these four homes is the Calhoun Mansion. With over 24,000 square feet, this is the largest home in Charleston and features a 90-foot cupola, beautiful piazzas, and Tiffany lighting.
