Wagener Terrace is an up and coming neighborhood located on the northwest section of the Charleston Peninsula. This is not a very walkable neighborhood because it’s one of the furthest communities from the shopping and restaurants of downtown. However, if you’re looking for an affordable house in a lower density area, Wagener Terrace would be a good place to start your home search. Because it lacks so much of the tourist traffic of the southern and middle sections of the peninsula, Wagener Terrace feels more like a traditional neighborhood that happens to be located in Downtown Charleston. You’ll find a good selection of brick cottages, fixer uppers, and homes built from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. As one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Downtown Charleston, Wagener Terrace is becoming increasingly popular among home buyers.
Nearby on Cleveland Street, McMahon Playground offers more than 6 acres of soccer fields, a baseball/softball field, basketball courts, and a children’s playground. Also, Hampton Park is within walking distance of most of the homes in Wagener Terrace. At nearly 64 acres, this is the largest park in the city. It features a reflecting pond, massive oak trees, picnic tables, beautiful landscaping, open green spaces, and great trails for walking or running.
Located within Wagener Terrace, Lowndes Grove Plantation is a circa 1786 home on the Ashley River that is used today for many weddings and social events. The plantation originally consisted of about 300 acres. The plantation has maintained a prized 14 acres with beautiful river views, and much of the rest of the land has been used to develop Wagener Terrace over the past hundred years.
