Old Village in Mt. Pleasant

Old Village has preserved its small downtown section, which used to be the main shopping district in Mt. Pleasant. The Pitt Street Pharmacy has remained much the same as when it opened more than 60 years ago, and you can still buy a drink from their "soda fountain" or fill your prescriptions there. The Village Bakery is a local favorite for sandwiches and desserts. You'll find fine dining at the Old Village Post House, which is owned by the Maverick Southern Kitchens chain (Slightly North of Broad and High Cotton are also part of the Maverick group).

Pitt Street Park has been developed around the old Pitt Street Bridge, which connected Sullivan's Island to Mt. Pleasant from 1898 to 1927 by a trolley. This is a favorite park among locals for its incredible marsh views on either side of the old road. In addition to Pitt Street Park, Shem Creek and the park at Patriots Point are also just minutes away.

Built in 1755 by Jacob Motte, the Hibben House is one of the oldest homes in Mt. Pleasant. The house was then part of a 67 acre plantation called Mount Pleasant, which is how the present day town got its name. The original house on Hibben Street has been extensively renovated and marked as a historic site.

Real estate in the Old Village ranges from historic multi-million dollar estates to massive new construction homes to small, 2 bedroom mill-house type homes. Old Village has some of the highest cost per square foot in Mt. Pleasant, but buyers love the location and the feel of this historic community. The streets lined with old growth oak trees create a setting that is unlike any of the other Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods.

The Old Village is bordered on 3 sides by the Charleston Harbor and the Cooper River.

Mount Pleasant's Historic District

Old Village is the closest Mt. Pleasant neighborhood to downtown Charleston. In fact, many of its homes overlook the Charleston Harbor. Real estate prices are viewed on a sliding scale, with harbor front estates bringing in prices as high as $8 million. Home prices steadily decrease with each block away from the water, with the lowest priced houses in the $400's. Some prices will go even lower, but many of these are tear downs as opposed to fixer uppers. Old Village has a charming and historic commercial section which offers a few dining options such as Old Village Post House, and the Pitt Street Park is also within walking distance (pictures are included below).

Most Mount Pleasant homes for sale are newer construction in master planned communities, so Old Village stands out for its historic charm and preservation. Founded in 1680, Old Village is one of the few areas outside of downtown Charleston where you can buy homes dating before 1900. However, you'll also find some new construction homes that have been tastefully incorporated into this historic neighborhood. Old Village is unique for this wonderful blend of old and new, and its unbeatable location puts it high on the neighborhood list for home buyers. Also, most of the homes in this community are zoned for Mt. Pleasant Academy, Moultrie Middle, and Wando High School.
